FLOWER HILL JOINS NORTH SHORE ALERT SYSTEM

THE VILLAGE IS NOW A MEMBER OF THE PWMOEM (PORT WASHINGTON—MANHASSET OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT) The Village of Flower Hill has joined our neighbors Munsey Park, Plandome, Plandome Heights and Plandome Manor in becoming a part of the PWMOEM. By being a part of this group, the Village is now a member of NorthShoreAlert.org, a mass notification system designed to keep residents and businesses on the Port Washington peninsula, north of Northern Blvd, informed of emergencies and certain community events. By registering with NorthShoreAlert.org, time-sensitive voice messages from the Villages, Town, or Police, Fire, and Water special districts where you live or work may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages may also be sent to cell phones, e-mail accounts and hearing impaired receiving devices. The system can be used for both emergency purposes and other important civil matters. For example, in the case of a missing child the police can pick a point on the map, draw a quarter mile radius, and within a minute they can telephone every home within that circle and send out a notice that this child is missing with information on what the child looks like in order to easily identify him or her. Another example is that the mapping feature can be used to pinpoint coastal homes if there was a possible flooding condition. On the non-emergency side, the system could be used to advise people of important civil matters, such as upcoming elections and street closures. The existing Flower Hill emergency contact list is automatically incorporated into this system, however, you may add other contacts such as e-mail, cell phone, text, work numbers, vacation home, adult children or parents. VILLAGE TO CEASE PASSPORT SERVICE AS OF APRIL 30, 2011
The US Department of State is initiating new security measures to prevent fraud in issuing passports. They are discontinuing to allow any facility that has the ability to issue birth certificates to also issue passports. Although the Village rarely issues birth certificates, we have the responsibility for issuance in the case of home births or an emergency birth at St. Francis Hospital. We will still maintain a supply of necessary forms, but you will need to use another acceptance facility. The nearest facilities are the Port Washington and Manhasset Post Offices. It has been a pleasure serving the public in this capacity. We hope this change will not cause too much inconvenience.

CEMETERY RESTORATION
 James Morgan McLaughlin, a Boy Scout living in Flower Hill Roslyn, choose the cleanup of the Flower Hill Cemetery as his Eagle Scout project bringing 40 people to the Revolutionary War era cemetery on April 10th. The cemetery is located on Country Club Dr. just east of Port Washington Blvd. Fellow Scouts and Adult Leaders from Port Washington’s Troop 7 raked leaves removed deadfall branches and cleared ivy which was choking the gravesite. A forgotten piece of history hidden in the Port Washington Country Club section of Flower Hill, the project has sparked interest by Flower Hill’s Mayor Charles W. Weiss and the Board of Trustees in working toward having the Cemetery listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
